I spend an unhealthy amount of time with my eyes glued to some sort of screen. If I’m not watching a movie or tv show on my laptop, I’m working on my blog or graphic design on my laptop. Trying to cut back on screen time has proved futile. So here are some thoughts on movies that I’ve been watching lately.
It’s so great that Marsai Martin got to direct and star as the lead in her own movie at age fifteen. A young black girl pioneer. This movie was great albeit it had some questionable moments as media does these days but I enjoyed it immensely because Issa Rae is bae and I love her (if you haven’t watched Insecure stop reading this and go and watch it now!) A young black girl grows up being bullied and turns into an adult bully who rules her company with an iron fist. She reminded me a little of Meryl Streep The Devil Wears Prada if she were a black woman in tech. Her employees are scared of her, no carbs are allowed and everything has to be done accordingly or else. Her turning into a child again helps her be kinder and grow.
Someone Great (2019
“Why men great till they gotta be great?” Someone Great is an amazing rom-com starring Gina Rodriguez, DeWanda Wise and Brittany Snow. It’s not your cliched break-up movie but an assertion of friendship and emotional growth. Gina’s character just broke up with her forever boyfriend (Lakeith 🥰🥰) because of a job opportunity in another city, the job she’s always wanted. The three women have been friends since college and are getting through relationships together.
The Intern (2015)
This was a cute movie. I don’t know why I’ve never heard of it before. I think I should start watching movies I missed that were released before 2017. Anyway, Anne Hathway’s company is running a senior citizen internship program for bored old people (which I mean is uh, young people can’t even get internships but let’s give old people a special internship program because okay) and Old Guy gets in. He wears a suit every day to a chilled “good vibes” office environment and becomes the office uncle. Although I liked this movie there wasn’t a single non-white person throughout, not even in the background which was strange.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
I wanted to watch this movie when it released and I forgot about it until I saw a trailer for the third film and I was like ohhhh. I liked this film. There’s something about the way it’s short that reminds me a little of Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock movie. I don’t know what it was about the fight scenes that I found similar. It was a solid good movie, enjoyable and captivating. Samuel L Jackson played a villain who had a lisp, I hate when I hear actors lisping because it reminds that’s exactly how I sound when I speak.
Terrifying!! I loved this so much. I’m super late to the party but wow. If you’ve been reading my movie posts you’d know how much I love horror. I don’t particularly like the gory bits, I just find them gross and not scary at all. Jordan Peele does such a great job with this one and Lupita is amazing too. I’d love to see her in a rom-com at some point. The ending had an insane I did not expect to see that like wtf?
